Scotland have named their U20 squad for their first get together of the season, a two day camp this week.

The thirty man squad, named my new Head Coach John Dalziel, consists of seventeen forwards and thirteen backs, from which even players have prior U20 experience.

The squad features a high number of Scottish Exiles, as well as a number of players who previously were at school in England before moving back to Scotland to continue their post-school rugby.

In the pack the likes of Seb Cecil (Nottingham Univeristy), Callum Sheldon (Leeds University), and the former Bristol Grammar School man, Ben Christie (Loughborough University) are included.

In the backline Harlequins’ Robbie Nairns, a mainstay of their A League side, is included, as is Northampton Saints’ Rory Hutchinson, as well as Bath’s Adam Hastings, now playing A League rugby for his club after two outstanding years at Millfield School.

A number of players are unfortunately not selected due to injury, including the former Sedbergh man Dan Elkington, and Gloucester’s Alex Craig, a man still young enough to play in the U18 Premiership.

Blair Kinghorn, Jamie Ritchie, and Zander Fagerson all miss out due to pro club commitments, and viewers of any of Glasgow’s recent televised games will have seen the 19 year old Fagerson starting at tighthead for them.

Speaking about his squad, Dalziel said:

“We’ve selected a strong group of players for the camp, enhanced by the large proportion of the squad who already have experience of this international age-grade stage.”

“The vast majority of the group have been exposed to a professional environment through involvement in the Academy, at the top-tier of the domestic game or at their respective exile clubs, which puts us in a good place.”

“As a coaching and management group, we’ve been looking at these players across the season and are now ready to start moulding the squad we’re looking to carry into the forthcoming Six Nations.”

“We’ve only got two days for our first camp and there’s a lot of work to be done. We are expecting the players to focus, and bring an energy and willingness to develop in the short space of time. This is a real chance for them to impress.”
