Scotland named a 40-man U18 squad of the Christmas period as Head Coach Ross Miller led a training camp ahead of the new year.

It was the first of a number of training camps ahead of the U18 Six Nations Festival in April, which takes place in France this time, with Scotland set to face Italy, England, and France. Prior to that, though, Scotland will host England in March.

The 40 man squad is made up of 19 backs and 21 forwards, and five are at schools in England, which further Scottish Qualified players likely to be added as the age-grade international season develops.

Of the five, four are from the two most dominant rugby schools in the north of England in the last few years and all four play for Sale Sharks U18. Up front are the Kirkham Grammar School pair Corey Bowker and Oliver Leatherbarrow, while in the backline are Sedbergh’s Murray Redpath and Cameron Melville, both of whom have brothers that have represented England at varying levels. Also joining the Kirkham and Sedbergh stars is Moulton College’s Olly Frostick, who plays for Northampton Saints U18.

Of the Scottish schools, Stewart’s Melville College are the most represented, with five players included, Michael Jones, Duncan Hood, Robert Gordon, Christian Townsend, and Matthew Russell.

Dollar Academy are also well represented, with four players in the squad, Ben Salmon, Ross McKnight, Michael Gray, and Max Williamson. Earlston High School and High School of Glasgow each have three players in the squad, Keiran Clarke, Roly Brett, and Sam Derrick representing Earlston, and Graeme Macdonald, Luke Armstrong, and John Patterson from Glasgow.

The only other schools with multiple representatives are Strathallan, George Watson’s College, and Merchiston Castle, each with two players in the squad.

Speaking to Scottish Rugby about the squad, Ross Miller said:

“The management team and I are really looking forward to the U18 programme and eager to get started with a group containing many FOSROC Scottish Rugby Academy supported players, representing the work done in the club and school game. We are excited by the initial training group we have brought together and want to see how they embrace their first opportunity in Largs.”
