The weekend saw some fantastic schools rugby games, with action in both the fifteen-a-side and seven-a-side versions of the game.

With some difficult headlines during the week, the on field action could hardly have been more welcome and the rugby on show was at times outstanding. Not least in some big performances from some of the sides that have been impressive throughout this 2019/20 season.

Fifteen-a-side

RGS High Wycombe claimed another high profile scalp to add to the likes of Millfield and Brighton College as they beat Warwick 15-12. Both had players missing to the U18 Academy League, but it was RGS that survived those losses most and secured the narrow victory in what has been a resurgent season for them.

Brighton College meanwhile have long since put their own defeat to RGS to bed, and on Saturday they put in yet another strong performance for a good 29-14 victory at home to Judd.

Mount St Mary’s College were in scintillating form despite going a man and a try down to St Ambrose College early on, bouncing back for a stunning 47-5 victory in their final fifteen a side game of the season.

In Scotland Dollar Academy were again in form, beating St Aloysius’ College 43-17, while there was a 39-12 victory for Dundee High School over Bell Baxter, and George Heriot’s enjoyed a fantastic 56-17 victory away at Hutchsons’ Grammar.

One of the best games of the day though was a thrilling 29-26 victory for Edinburgh Academy over Glasgow Academy, while Stewart’s Melville went down to Northern Irish tourists Royal Belfast Academy, 26-10.

Elsewhere John Fisher’s sublime start to 2020 continued with an outstanding 54-0 victory over Tiffin, another superb display from the South East London side. Meanwhile St George’s Harpenden were in similar form thanks to a 46-5 victory in Essex at Brentwood. Bablake, meanwhile, won a tight one against KES Birmingham, 8-5.

There were some massive games in the North West, too. Not least a 22-5 victory for Lancaster RGS over Manchester Grammar, a fine victory against a strong team.

There was an impressive performance from King’s Macclesfield, too. They were 14-7 victors at a strong Wirral Grammar School. Further South Loughborough Grammar won 15-10 at King Henry VIII, Coventry.

There was also action on Friday night as Chislhurst & Sidcup Grammar and Beth’s Grammar met at Blackheath RFC. It was an incredibly close contest, decided ultimately by the boot as Beth’s just edged it, 8-7.

7s

Sunday saw the 7s season really kick off. Millfield hosted a 7s get together that was designed as a big warm up event for the season ahead and reports back are that there are going to be some seriously good 7s players to keep an eye on this season!

Sunday also saw the Seaford 7s take place, with Epsom College carrying on their 7s form from last year and from the fifteen-a-side season take place as they claimed the spoils, despite having to field a very young and forwards heavy side. You can read our roundup here: Epsom College seal Seaford 7s title.
