The Schools Cup competitions begin this week with the opening round of the U18 Schools Vase.

The Cup and the U15 tournaments begin in a fortnight but the extra fixtures in the U18 Vase see it takes place this week.

It actually all started with Mill Hill’s 21-17 victory over QES Barnet on Saturday and ought to follow through into an exciting week of rugby this week.

There is plenty of non Vase rugby this week too though, with some great Wednesday fixtures, some touring games, and four Friday Night Lights fixtures.

Tuesday

Tuesday looks quiet at the moment, though a few of the unconfirmed Vase kick offs could take place on Tuesday.

What is certain is that Norton Hill will host Warminster in the Vase and Cranbrook host Argentine tourists, St Albans.

Wednesday

Wednesday is a huge day in the Vase. Among the big highlights is a cracking looking fixture between Bradford Grammar School and Prince Henry’s Grammar School, which should be a competitive game for such an early stage.

Another great looking fixture is King’s Worcester’s trip to Hereford Cathedral School. King’s have plenty of pedigree, while Hereford Cathedral’s results over the last few years have been impressive.

Leicester Grammar School struggled against Stamford on Saturday, so their game against a decent Welbeck side should also be very interesting.

Ampleforth College open their account against Richmond, where they will fancy their chances of a decent victory.

Last year’s Plate Champions were Reigate Grammar School. They are now in the Vase this year and open the competition at home against Glyn, a game they should win but that will be a very tricky game for a first round tie.

Arguably the game of the round though will be Reed’s v St George’s College Weybridge. These two are fierce rivals and always well matched and should produce a fantastic game of rugby on Wednesday. Keep an eye on whichever side loses, they could go a very long way in the Vase competition.

Outside of the Vase, there are plenty of other exciting fixtures too, perhaps none more so than Sedbergh’s trip to Wilmslow High School. Both picked up good wins at the weekend, with Sedbergh particularly impressive as they beat Whitgift, and the men in brown will want to really make strides in these early season games.

KES Stratford have an opportunity to make a statement in what should be a good game against KES Five Wayes, while King’s Canterbury host Duke of York’s RMS. KCS Wimbledon will look to give their season a jumpstart after defeat to Caterham on Saturday, they travel to Tiffin. Eltham College host City of London Freemen’s, which should be a great game of rugby.

Thursday

Thursday is a quieter day, but there are still some decent fixtures. In the Vase the highlights is surely Loughborough’s trip to Trent College, for what ought to be one of the most competitive games of the round. King Henry VII Coventry, meanwhile, host Arden Academy.

Outside of the Vase St Albans of Argentina play their second tour game of the week as they visit KES Southampton, for what should be a special occasion.

Dean Close, who have looked impressive so far, make the trip to a Magdalen College side who will be looking to bounce back after a narrow defeat to Bloxham on Saturday.

Friday

There are some big games on Friday evening, perhaps none more so than a big derby between Manchester Grammar School and Stockport Grammar School.

There’s another big derby as St Albans meet Mill Hill, two sides that have started the season well and will be hoping to keep the moment flying.

Reed’s play their second game of the week as they host RGS Guildford, while Warminster make the trip to Wells Cathedral.
