The first major school 7s tournament of the season took place on Sunday as Seaford College hosted the annual Seaford 7s.

16 teams gathered, with Dulwich College coming out on top, beating Epsom College 12-0 in the final to earn the first silverware of the 7s season.

It was a strong outing from Dulwich, who topped the toughest pool of the lot, Group 4, with wins over Sevenoaks, Caterham, and Hurstpierpoint College before they met New Hall in the Cup semi finals.

New Hall had performed well in Group 3, beating Gordon’s, Seaford College 2nd VII, and former champions Bedford to top the group, but Dulwich were simply too strong and ended up with a highly impressive 43-0 victory.

That set up the final against Epsom College, who had come through a tough semi final against Group 2 winners Bishop Wordsworth’s, 19-12. Epsom’s route had seen them oust the hosts, Seaford College, to top Group 1, leaving Seaford in second after both had also beaten Emanuel and Merchant Taylors’.

Dulwich once again showed their class in the final for that 12-0 victory, one that will see them into the next few tournaments full of confidence.

Last year’s champions, Hurstpierpoint College, came away with silverware too, though not the one they wanted. After finishing behind Dulwich in the group they went into the Shield, where a semi final win over Bedford, who they beat in last year’s final, and a 19-17 victory over Portsmouth Grammar in the final saw them claim that title.

Hurstpierpoint’s 2nd VII also collected some silverware, winning the Bowl. The Bowl semi finalists were all of the sides that finished bottom of their group, and Hurstpierpoint first beat Merchant Taylors’ and then Gordon’s in the final to claim that gong.

Meanwhile Caterham won the Plate, for those finishing third in the groups, beating Seaford’s 2nd VII in the semi final and Trinity in the final. That victory meant that of the four trophies given out, three of the winners came from that terrifically challenging Group 4.

Dulwich College return home with the plaudits though, a brilliant day’s work and a set of performances that should set them up to be among the favourites in the next few tournaments they enter too – and little wonder, some of their fifteen-a-side rugby was fantastic to watch this year and that style looks to have translated to 7s brilliantly.
