One of the biggest tournaments of the weekend and a huge indicator ahead of the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s will be the Christ College Brecon 7s Draw.
Twenty teams will be in attendance, split into four groups of five teams each. The top two from each group will go into the Cup quarter finals, while the third and fourth placed sides will head to the Plate quarter finals, those finishing bottom of their Pool will compete in the Bowl semi finals.
The reigning champions are Kirkham Grammar School, and this year they will be among the favourites once again. However they face a fiendishly tough Group D, not least in the form of AASE champions Hartpury College, who won the Plate last year and appear very strong. King’s Worcester, Shrewsbury, and Ysgol Bro Dinefwr will provide staunch tests too.
The hosts, Christ’s College Brecon, are in Group A. Millfield reside there, and they are always a threat, though as they are competing at both this tournament and the Canford 7s it is unclear which will draw their first string at this stage. Campion will also be tough opponents, so too Wellington School and Ellesmere College.
Bristol Grammar School have been on the rise over the last couple of years and will certainly be one of the strongest sides in the competition. They are in group B, which has a strong Welsh presence, including Cathedral School Llandaff, Monmouth, and last year’s runners up, Whitchurch High School.
Over in Group C Clifton College are probably the side to watch, they enjoyed another strong fifteen-a-side season this year. Hartpury College’s 2nd VII will also be strong and will definitely push for a Cup quarter final spot, while Malvern College can also be a tough side. Welsh legends Llandovery College and North Wales’ Rydal Penrhos should provide strong opposition too.
